Let’s face it — staying energized at work today is harder than ever. We’re constantly juggling calendars, notifications, emails, and meetings — and somewhere in between, we’re expected to be sharp, focused, and creative.
Over the years, I’ve learned that managing my energy, not just my time, is what truly makes the difference. And in an age where AI is accelerating the pace of business and decision-making like never before, that lesson has only become more important. We don’t just need to be faster — we need to be smarter with how we manage our presence, attention, and capacity.
Here’s how I stay sharp.
One Task at a Time — The Power of Focus
Even with all the digital tools available, I still go old-school: I start my week by writing out my to-do list on paper. Why? Because writing things down helps me commit — and seeing them checked off one by one gives me a real sense of progress.
Instead of multitasking (which often just means doing multiple things poorly), I focus on one task at a time and give it my full attention. It’s amazing how much faster and better things get done when you’re truly focused.
Use Breaks to Recharge, Not Just Refuel
Burnout isn’t about working hard — it’s about not pausing to recharge. I take short breaks between tasks — even just 10–20 minutes. Sometimes I’ll go for a walk, read something non-work related, or grab a coffee and chat with a colleague.
These little pauses keep my mind fresh and help me return to work with more clarity and energy.
Be the CEO of Your Calendar
Your calendar should work for you, not the other way around. I structure mine to protect my most important resource — energy. A few things that help:
– Define your work hours — especially important in remote or hybrid settings. Boundaries matter.
– Block out commute time — even if you’re not in traffic, use that time to transition mentally.
– Schedule your lunch — and actually take it. Even 30 minutes away from your desk makes a difference.
– Batch your email — checking constantly is a massive energy drain. I stick to set times.
– Protect focus time — I block deep work sessions like important meetings. They don’t get bumped.
Water Is Fuel for Your Brain
Sounds simple, but it’s crucial: drink water. Your brain and body need it to perform. I keep a water bottle at my desk and refill it a few times a day. It’s one of the easiest and most effective ways to boost your energy and stay clear-headed.
Final Thought: It’s Not About Doing More. It’s About Doing Better.
We all have the same number of hours in a day — but how we use our energy is what sets us apart. Focus. Recharge. Be intentional with your time. Take care of your body. These aren’t just productivity tips — they’re principles for living and leading well in an accelerated world.
I’ll be writing frequently about modern leadership, performance, and personal growth at The 7th Factor, where I serve as a guide. If you’re looking to lead with clarity in a high-speed world, I invite you to follow along.
Stay energized,
